Technically speaking, a rope is an assemblage of yarns, plies, fibres or strands that are curled or braided together into a larger and stronger form. As ropes have tensile strength, they can be used for dragging and lifting purpose. For this very purpose a rope is thicker and stronger than a cord, string or twine.
Materials Used in Rope Manufacture
A rope maybe constructed or manufactured from different raw materials. The material maybe either long, stringy, fibrous material or are generally manufactured from natural or synthetic fibres.
Synthetic ropes are generally superior in many ways as they are markedly stronger than their natural counterparts. They have higher tensile strength and are less prone to rotting. They have the ability to float on water without rotting.
Natural fibres used are Manila hemp, hemp, linen, cotton, coir, jute, straw and sisal. While these raw materials are all eco-friendly, they are prone to easily perish.
Ropes are also made from other materials like silk, wool, rayon and wire. Wire ropes are generally made of steel or other metal alloys. Wire ropes comprise of many strands laid or twisted together like a helix. Earlier wrought iron was used but later its main raw material became steel.
Wire Ropes or Mining Ropes
The new generation wire rope was invented by the German mining engineer, Wilhelm Albert for utilization in mining activities in the Harz Mountains of Germany. It rapidly gained acceptance because of its superiority to natural ropes made of hemp or even metal chains which were previously used in the activity.
Initially mining ropes consisted of three strands consisting of four wires each. Gradually the process was improvised on. Albert’s ropes comprised of twisted wires about a hemp rope core. Six of these wire strands were twisted in alternating directions to gain extra stability.
The first Mining Rope factory was built in Pennsylvania in the 1840s. That was the decade which witnessed major upheavals in the mining industry. Widespread deep shaft mining began to burgeon both in Europe and North America. Surface mineral deposits were drained out by miners.
Material of Mining Ropes
Mining ropes are generally made of steel wires of non-alloy carbon steel whose carbon content is 0.4 to 0.95%. The high tensile strength of Mining Ropes empowers them to encourage and aid huge tensile forces and to run over sheaves with comparatively small diameters.
Safety of Mining Ropes

It was used in the transmission of mechanical power because of its low cost and lower friction losses and its ability to transmit power over a few hundreds of kilometers or miles. It was also used in the automation of new cable cars.
